Every time the dealer starts a new shoe, POTW announces as he pushes out his bet: "Let's see what the count is." He then talks constantly about "the count" and what cards are coming up next and how we should all raise our bets because "the count is good!"

In the meantime, he's drinking A LOT, doubling hard hands without any apparent strategy, standing on 13, 14 and 15 without any apparent strategy, and raising his bets when the count is actually negative. In fact, some of his biggest bets were when the count was -12 and more. He then has the nerve to ask me not to hit a 16 against a dealer 10 because he's sure the next card is one that will improve HIS hand, but not one that will improve mine. I told him if he wanted to buy my hand, he could play it any way he wanted. :laugh:

After announcing to the table and the dealer AGAIN that he was counting cards, one of the players told him: "You know if the casino thinks you're counting cards, they'll kick you out." He happily said "they haven't kicked me out yet!"

Did he never bust on a hard double? Was the dealer stiff every time he stood on a stiff? Did the guy happen to "guess right" EVERY time?

If so then that wasn't a ploppy.

This is really tempting, but you're banking on the pit boss being able to recognize that the count is wrong.

I was raised in a sarcastic household, where every emotion or sentiment was expressed in precisely the opposite manner, so I have good deadpan skills for mimicking something I despise. This may lead to a new-age type persona for me, with lots of talk of harmonic flow, including mentions of obscure asteroids, syzygies, and pyramid crystals. Plus, my parents knew a few engineering/TRW/JPL types in the 70s, so I have a solid grounding in the cant of telekinesis and UFO believers - for some reason, engineering folks who should know better have a weakness for this sort of thing. Maybe I'll incorporate some EST or Landmark Forum talk to complete the package.

For some reason, my sincere disgust for new agers makes deadpan derision much easier. I think I could spew the most outrageous bullshit at the table, and nobody would think it was mockery.

Of course he wasnt winning. This horrible human exists as a ploppy- i feel for your pain as this specimen seems very ill indeed and not even tolerable for a brief period. Thank you for taking the time to write about the moron. It brings me piece of mind to realize there is the possiblility that I could have been born as stupid as a person like this- it is worth rejoicing even as I struggle daily with my own pathetic shortcomings (non BJ related).

HARD double = 8 AND 9 I would think. He wasnt doubling 12's ? Dood was parented by people on drugs, hard ones.

He was indeed doubling on 12 and 13, but not consistently. The more he drank, the more erratic it became.

His winnings were also very erratic because of his betting strategy (if you can call it that). Min bet one hand, 10x min the next. In no time, he'd go from having a big stack of red and green in front of him to a short stack of reds then back up again - rinse and repeat. It finally all got away from him and he went to hit up the ATM machine and I think the dealer told me he lost all his money before he left about an hour later, but I'd changed tables a couple times throughout the night.

He should've taken me up when I offered to sell him my hand. I had the minimum bet out, he had 5x minimum out then doubled down on his 6/4. I got the A he was hoping to get - and he got the 5 he was hoping the next guy would get. He would've saved money buying my bet. :laugh:

Playing with professionals

Never rule out the possibility that someone is completely deranged, psychotic, delusional, etc. All walks of life frequent your local gaming establishments including the CRAZY ones! I once sat at a table next to a guy making various statements such as, "I know what I am doing; I am a PROFESSIONAL! I do this for a living!"

What can you really say to statements such as these (particularly when made in front of the whole table, the dealer and loud and boisterous enough that whatever pit supervisor that is within earshot can also hear it) other than, "Gee, wow... is that right?" Observations of their play for any length of time imply the exact opposite is true but they are full of advice for the entire table and just full of themselves... truly a legend in their own mind.

It was the whackiest thing I'd ever seen and oh what the heck, I couldn't help myself; I had to ask leading questions to get them to talk of their blackjack expertise further! I also had to make various sarcastic commentary along the way such as, "Gee, they should just give up already and hand you the whole chip tray now and get it over with!" It was humorous and gave me the same sort of sick fascination that I would get observing one of the mentally deranged homeless people on the boardwalk staring upward and having an argument with the cloud formations in the sky.
