Apr 30, 2007 Last week, Arizona authorities raided four illegal online gambling rings, centered in Phoenix but operating in three states, seizing millions of dollars in cash, cars, and property. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said millions of dollars were being collected, and often extorted, from gamblers visiting online sites based overseas. This recent crackdown highlights one of the major problems our state and local authorities face: enforcing existing state laws prohibiting gambling over the Internet.

More Online Gambling Legislation Introduced (Archive copy)
The Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative announced its support for the Internet Gambling Regulation and Tax Enforcement Act, introduced today by Congressman Jim McDermott (D-WA). The bill would create a taxation regime for online gambling companies to be licensed under the recently introduced Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act (H.R. 2046).

It looks as if people may need to wait a little longer before they can place bets on sporting events at a Delaware racino, even though a House committee released a bill Tuesday to allow sports betting in Delaware.

Barney Frank Urges Americans to Call Reps

Following the hearings in the House Financial Services Committee held on Friday, Democratic Congressman Barney Frank this week has been out on the interview circuit in order to promote his new Bill that would legalize and regulate Internet gambling. In the interviews his general message to American citizens who would like the new law to pass has been a strong one.

"Call your representative and your senators and tell them to get out of your life!"

When asked about whether his bill will be one that takes decades to pass, like the pro-marijuana campaigns that are still running unsuccessfully across the country, or a couple years to pass, he chooses the latter option.

He explains that "it really depends on the citizens whose rights to gamble were infringed upon."

Internet gambling laws at stake

Washington - No one's ready to say you can bet on it, but Congress may change its mind and make gambling over the internet legal again.

Online poker was dealt a losing hand last year when Congress effectively banned most types of internet gambling.

Poker lovers like Michael Bolcerek complained that was unfair.

"We think it's certainly more closely aligned with a sport than gambling," said Michael Bolcerek of the Poker Players Alliance.
