Taking a hit

How many times have you had to take a hit in a high count because the pit was right next to you. I mean right next to watching if you don't in a high count with a big bet out. This guy is standing next to me +5 count big bet out me with 16 dealer showing the jack. I know I should stand but the play will most of assuradly blow my cover if I stand and a loss is for sure. I opted to stand and proclaim I will leave it to the bj gods which I promptly won when the dealer flipped a six and a ten after to bust. I left right after that hand cause the getting was good. What would you have done considering the circumstances. blackchipjim

hit 16vT w/heat dilemma

Well, I for one remember standing on 16vT all the time "on a feeling" before I knew anything about BS or counting, so I'd just have played dumb. It's not that drastic of a boat-rocking, cover-blowing play, IMHO, compared to others that may have come up.

I thought we were talking about doobies.

It happens that the most innocent of losing your nerves and chickening out with a big bet on the table also most closely matches my emotions when I have a big bet out and get a 16v10 or 12v2 or whatever. So standing on that hand is a pretty easy sell.

It probably depends on of the pit is merely there, or watching, vs. actually hawking your game.

Hitting 16v10 in a negative count makes me more nervous.

16 v 10 is a bad proposition no matter what. the pit knows this, the ploppies know this, and everyone plays this hand differently. people hit this when they could surrender it. people stand when they should hit, and people hit it when they don't know they should stand.

i would not call this a heat generating move, especially with a big bet out. as EasyRhino said, if they are hawking your play in particular, that is a different story. and if that is the case, you should be leaving 2 hands ago....

re-reading your post, i have been in a situation like that, where the pit was only hanging out, maybe eyeing my game a little, but i wouldn't have called it heat. i stood on it. there have been occasions where i insured 16, lost, then surrendered, right in front of the pit. that is the tell-tale counter move. forgetting splitting tens. who insures a 16. who loses half their wager, then throws out the other half, knowing the dealer doesn't have a BJ?
A: a good counter.

i got away with this, just by pretending to be a moron not worthy of their attention. if you thought they were onto your abilities, then play it as best you see fit, i.e. stand on 16 (if you lose) throw up your hands and cash out. if you win, say you had a hunch.

Can Get Expensive

If you hit your big bet 16 in a high count it can get expensive for not only that hand but in the future. It will cost you again if you miss a hand due to the cut card because you took that one card.

A pit is suppose to watch the games, if you are the big better they are going to watch you, no reason to panic.

As long as he is over your shoulder watching--raise the drama

Better he be next to me than watching from three tables away because now he can get a personal glimpse of the hell I will pretend to go through trying to make a decision about what to do on a horrible hand with a big bet out.

"I busted the last few 16's I hit, perhaps I am due? Or I always seem to bust these should I stay, should I flip a coin, why does not this freakin casino offer surrender?" Say all this or stuff like it to the pit, get his opinion if he will give it and then of course do what you knew you were going to do before you went through this mental time killing exercise. I have had the pit call heads or tails for me, had the pit tell me what to do and then not do it or do it, and then when it is all over just re-asses the heat/lack of heat level.
