As far as I can see, anyone choosing to hedge a matchplay is doing the casino a favour, both by reducing its value and by reducing the casino's overall variance with respect to the matchplay promotion.
I suppose they might fear that one person doing it could cause an outbreak among those who wouldn't have thought of the idea, and more importantly are the kind of gamblers the promotion is designed to entice. They might follow the example they see, making one hedged bet and then walking away.
