I don't understand. if a splitted hand is an underdog why split it and risk twice your bet? why not just hit and lose your original bet?

Because the original hand is even more of an underdog. Take a pair of eights for example. An 8 is still an underdog in most cases, but a hand of 16 is pure death. If you hit, you'll probably bust. If you stand, you'll probably lose. Having 2 hands of eight are better than one hand of sixteen. That's usually the reason you split.
