Counters don't tip

I calculated that tipping $2 an hour is 10% of my expected value. Even if I tip only when I'm winning, that's about 6% of my expected value. Plus, a measly $2 tip after winning $300 in a session looks cheap. So, to avoid that, I don't tip at all if other ploppies tip. They're going to lose their money anyway, might as well give some of it to the dealer. I increase my tip if the dealer is fast and gives better penetration and doesn't slow down the game by talking. Ironically the worst kind of dealer is the one who tries to start a conversation and deals half as many hands per hour because he's distracted. And of course, any error in my favor means no tip.

Not as cheap as zero dollars. Sometimes counters DO tip! There are good
threads here on this subject.

I say if you can't afford to tip a few dollars you can't afford to play. Although I admittedly do not tip much unless they're games I enjoy a significant edge at.

Agreed. Why the hell is the OP even playing if he he's only getting $20 an hour?

If he's doing this as a hobby, then it's a hobby and he should offer a reasonable tip ($2 an hour is reasonable).

If he's trying to go pro, why is he doing it for $20 an hour?

Maybe he'd win more if he didn't intentionally lose his winnings when he sees dealers mispaying.

Oh Joy. Another tipping thread.
Got to luv the math. A $2 tip is 10% of his EV, but a session brings $300 in winnings.

Haven't checked for the other tipping threads, but as someone who works on both sides of the table, I have an opinion on tipping. Play a buck or two for the dealer every now and then, especially if it's your home casino. It will help you to not look like a jerk, and you really don't want dealers and dual-rates talking amongst each other about how much they hate you. If you can't afford 5 or 10 bucks every 40 minutes, you're doing it wrong anyway.

BTW, as you can see, it's my first post here. Long-time observer, though. Some great info here. Thanks to all the contributors.

Moo, don't get all judgmental on him. For some people, $20/hr is a lot. I could be wrong but KJ, started off playing for a living earning about 1/2 of that.

Every time I see off duty dealers playing they always tip a ridiculous amount. I figure that makes up for guys like me who stiff.

tippers?

Ok I'll bite on this thread. The facts are left out to protect the innocent. I had a conversation with a dealer and it went something like this. The dealer was a relief dealer and complained to me while playing that a player that won a sizable amount at game didn't tip enoung! At first thought I'm thinking " Please not another whiner" but this one genuinly thought that just dealing cards was cause enough for a certain percentage of the win? I was amazed at the statement alone much less the atttude it was said with. My wife was sitting with me at the time and when we left she commented on the statement. The dealer was way out of line thinking a player owes them anything much less a percentage. They didn't compensate the player for losses and shouldn't expect a tip when or if the player hits.

I will also bite. Many times , or I should say all the times, I won $500 a hand and didn't tip the dealer, it seemed to anger some ploppies. In many occasions, some placed $5 bet for the dealer even they flat bet $10 just to hint me that I should tip.

In one instance, a ploppy told me "What kind of person doesn't tip the dealer when he won $500 a hand?" Surprisingly the dealer told him in my defense, "You don't know what he went through, he has lost $3000 since he sat down."

On the same topic, I found that at green chip table, players hardly tip. Most people tip only when they left table, if they won. At red chip table, ploppies place bet for dealer all the time to "bribe" dealer to give them good cards. There is a reason the rich get richer while the poor stay poor.

I have noticed this too. In turn they keep asking dealer what needs to be done in most of the stiffs and splits.

Makes sense, I know waiters and waitresses are huge tippers when they go out to eat.

What really funny is when strippers find themselves out in a different strip club, they tip the local strippers too. Some strippers get into being admired by other women and some loathe it, so it can make for some interesting social dynamics.

Tip, if you can get something in return, or if your moral code requires you to tip.

The last tip I gave a dealer was, "Shut up and deal'em!"
hmm, now see, this is not a tip but a command. A tip would be more like:
Don't play the stock market, now shut up and deal em!
But really, IF you have a 'home base casino' one should/virtually must tip occasionally, yes?

Moral code in a strip joint?

After a good session I usually tip modestly. It's for a lot of reasons. I don't feel compelled to, but dealer's salaries are cr*p, not that they didn't have a choice in jobs, and also, it makes one look less like an advantage player. I don't want the dealers talking among themselves that this one or that one is probably a card counter because he or she resents the lack of tipping. Also, like you say, if you go their frequently, it oils the wheels, and makes you a persona gratis. I like tables where I am on friendly terms with the dealers and the pit people. Everything seems to go better when the atmosphere is copacetic.
