quiting playing Video Poker

Video Poker

I don't recommend VP play for most players today for a few reasons, chief of which are the risk and bankroll required and the ever dwindling number of reasonable plays for smaller bankrolls.

There are two main ways to win at VP, if you live in an area with lots of low limit full pay single line games (Vegas, Reno) you can just do small plays all over the place and then run the weekly coupon circuit collecting your EV until you need to re-prime the pump. If you don't live in the area involved playing these low limit games is just wasting your time IMHO unless there is something special going on.

The other way is to have giant bankroll yourself or as part of a group and do lots of plays on VP that is either full pay or close to full pay (like 15/10 deuces or 8/5 bonus poker) and play until you either win and get the desired amount of coin-in or hit a particular loss target and then make it up in the form of rebates, airfare, and mail offers.

The good straight up multi-line plays at medium stakes are mostly gone and when one pops up it's usually wiped out pretty quickly.

The big problem with VP is that you are relying on the future goodwill of the casino for your EV. You have to network with players to know which casinos are generous and which are not otherwise you risk playing a losing game and getting nothing for your efforts. Sometimes a casino gets mad at you and puts you on no-mail status which means all your effort in priming the pump is for naught. Finally you have to realize that if you don't hit the Royal at VP you are playing a 2 to 3% losing game and that can destroy your bankroll pretty quickly.

Most new AP's don't have the network of players needed to pull off the higher stakes VP properly and low stakes EV isn't good enough for the time you are wasting unless you live in that area since most coupons would go un-cashed and the locals places who send that type of mail only send it to locals. For lower stakes you are better off sticking to games that give you your EV right on the spot.

BP, great input. I totally agree that VP could be profitable. It could be a right game for someone in a certain circumstance.
Most importantly to me is that vast majority of the replies have drew a clearer picture. That is VP could be addictive and bankroll ruining. No body seems disagree about these two facts. Even if VP is +ev (not in my regular gaming area though), the ev is nothing like what we could expect from a regular bj game. So my take from this thread is continue to abandoning VP. If I need a break from a bad beat of bj, I will remind me what Jason said. You guys are great. I felt good passing those machines today.

A lot of times I will get comped free play for slot machines and I will go straight for VP playing jacks or better. If you don't want to be taxed on your winnings you have to play smaller stakes where the jackpot is under $1,200. If you have good stragedy and get a good payout chart than video poker can be a fine game.

I just cashed in my 125 slot promotion for 60 bucks. What a lousy luck on that DDB machine. But I didn't insert any of my own money to the machine. Once I stop playing with my own money, I am sure the promotions and slot bonus will diminish. I don't care for it any more because I think any minute that I spend on a machine is not worth it. I can get a better EV from a blackjack table.

Any video poker game that pays 1 for two pairs has very high variance. If getting most of your money back you'd be better off playing Bonus Poker or Jacks or Better.

OK. I normally would have played JOB. But the pay table was just unacceptably bad. So I took the risk and played DDB. What's the full pay table like for bonus poker? I don't think I have ever played it.

Ironically, this thread entitled 'quitting playing video poker' has me thinking of starting to play some again when I return to vegas shortly. This thread and a few others have posts that mention real good monthly mailer that are sent to vegas local that may push the EV into positive territory. Unforetunately this is an area I know nothing about. I would greatly appreciate any information (either public, or private message) that you could share on what specific stores to play to start receiving these monthly mailer and what amount of hands are necessary each month to keep them coming.

I know this much. I don't get squat for playing VP in AC. Maybe oh .25 in comps per 100 hands at $1.25/hand Sadly enough, VP is dying there as 9/6 JOB used to be prevalent. I walked into Caesars the other day and I kid you not, they had 6/5 JOB. I'm guessing the house must have like a 5% edge on that or so. It's so bad that even when they have 9/6 JOB, if you ask a slot attendant or anyone for that matter if they have 9/6 JOB they look at you funny as if you're speaking Greek.

You have to try Wynn. If you don't have a players card, they give very good sign up bonus, at least it was in last year, plus same day and next trip rewards, such as free play and free buffets. My wife played a little VP there but she gets free room offer from them. She plays VP exclusively. She also gets free room and free slot plays from MGM properties in LV. Comparing her actions to what I have put on the blackjack tables, hers like nothing but her offer is pretty close to what I get already. Not fair!

Thunder, do you play VP in Borg? I got black label exclusively from VP play, since I can't play blackjack with my card there. Their slot dollar and comp aren't that bad either. Last month they have promotions such as free Apple gifts and 3x slot dollars too. I would not play much anymore for the reasons that I discussed here. 9/6 JOB are everywhere from $.25 to $25.
