Vegas Trip

1) The Plaza offers a 4 deck game with 0.7 decks cut off. This is the only 4 deck game that I saw in the entire Vegas section of CBJN! 0.7 cutoff seems to me to be excellent pen (only 17.5% removed). This looks too good too be true, given the games available elsewhere - what's the catch?

Are these games good enough to warrant trips from a hotel on the Strip? If so, what is the best way to get there - taxi? The location of Bighorn is given as "North," Palace Station as "LV," and the Plaza "Downtown."
Well it turns out the Plaza does have a 4 deck game now. You can get there by taking the Deuce from the strip. It costs $3 each way. Its worth the trip. There is a shuttle to Palace Station but I don't know where you would get it from. Check Palace Stations website. The Longhorn is a dump not worth the cab ride. Shadroch is right they pull the first burn card and whatever number it is, that's how many cards they burn. The casino only has 4 tables.

Thanks for the info ST, I will definitely work the Plaza into my itinerary now. Did you play their 4D personally? How did you find the atmosphere - crowded/abandoned, black action/red heaven,
relaxed/:whip:? (I will be traveling there midweek Mon-Fri.)

All the casinos you are looking at all have $10 MP coupons in ACG.
Thanks for reminding me of that book! I have the 2006 edition, but I only used it once for Foxwoods, so I forgot about them. It would certainly be of much more use with so many included casinos in such close proximity. Also, should I be searching for such coupons in local Vegas publications as well, whether they be newspapers or casino literature? If so, what is the best place to find them?

Also, two other general questions for you guys -
Is the Downtown area safe to be wandering through alone at night?
Is this "Deuce" of which you speak easy to use, with well marked pickup points and frequent and regular service times?
From the TripAdvisor website about the Deuce Bus: "If going downtown, count on a trip of up to an hour."

Yes, it's ok to roam around down town at night, but only under the canopy of Freemont st. If you step outside of that your asking for trouble. Some say its ok to go up to EC but I would only do that during the day.

The Deuce is easy to use just kind of slow. The time that it takes really depends where you are going. If you are going to say the Sahara, count on about 15 min. From there it could take up to 45 min to get to Mandalay Bay. Last time I was in Vegas I stayed DT but ended up playing a lot at MGM and the Trop, it was taking a good hour to get to MGM. To save some time I was getting off at the Sahara and catching the mono rail to MGM. I think you will save about .5 hour depending on the time of day/night. When I was there last the Deuce was $5 to ride all day/12hours.

Have a great trip!

Fremont St from the Plaza to the
El Cortez is fine, at any time. The block between Las Vegas Blvd and the EC used to be a bit rough, but the downtown business zone has expanded to cover it. There are security guards posted there, as well as two trendy nitespots with bouncers the size of some NYC studio apartments. The El Cortez now has an entrance right on Las vegas blvd so you can skip that street anyway.
The Duece is pretty slow, especially at nite as many striplings go downtown for the Light Show. I believe you can still buy an all day pass for about $5. Then you can use it to go casino hopping as well. It is quite frequent, maybe every ten minutes or so.
I'd consider renting a car for a few days. They are very cheap and will get you to the outer casinos easily. A three day rental isn't all that much more than you'll spend on cabs to and from the airport.

I agree with the car rental..
We stayed 10 days in Oct. and thru Alamo the car was $117.

The Plaza is one of those unique places. If you keep your sessions short, you will be ok. The 4D table is their busiest table, but I can't think of any reason to play that table. If you're going to visit a place with better games, why not play the better games?

The Plaza's 4D game is described in CBJN as having a cutoff of 0.7 decks - which is the same cutoff as their 2 deck game! This results in a pen of 65% for the 2D versus 82.5% for the 4 decker.

But perhaps even so, a 2 deck game is still considered superior?

The other factor for me is that the 4D is a face up shoe game, and I have experience with those. CBJN also says the 2D is dealt from a shoe, but I don't think this necessarily means it is face up?

The Plaza's 2D game is face up. Pelerus don't be intimidated by a face down game. It's a little odd at first but after about 15 mins you will be comfortable with it. Just always be consistent with the way you count the cards so you don't make mistakes.

Just back from LV and this is a playable game. Pen is dealer dependent ranging from good to very good. One of the better games I saw in town.

Plaza is a sweat palace. If you are a red chipper spreading 5-20 you may be OK. Otherwise if like me you play light green chips you will be 86d. I was trespassed in 20 minutes spreading 1-5 on DD. And I have never been backed off DT before. I would not advise anybody to waste their time here unless their bankroll is so small all they can do is afford a $5 unit. And if your bankroll is that small, you ought to have another hobby besides gambling. This puts aside the fact that it is a dirty, miserable dump with a clientele that you can usually see on episodes of "Cops: The Trailer Park Files."

First visit in a long time

Just before Christmas I made a journey into the Plaza and was pleasantly surprised by the clean up job they have done in there. At the time I did see 4D BJ. I was showing a visiting BJ player around downtown.

When I go downtown I tend to spend my time in Binions.

Before moving to Vegas I always liked staying at the Flamingo because of its central location. The addition of the double decker "Duce" buses and the monorail make traveling the strip a breeze even for us mature ones.

Have fun
